Paulina Bren received her B.A. in The College of Letters Program at Wesleyan University, her M.A. in East European Studies from the University of Washington, and her Ph.D. in Modern European history from New York University. She has recently finished her book manuscript, entitled The Greengrocer and His T.V.: A History of Communism after the 1968 Prague Spring, which is based on previously inaccessible archival documents, including the meeting notes of the Communist Party's Central Committee, socialist soap opera scripts, television viewers' letters, and political dissidents' internal debates.

She has been the beneficiary of many fellowships, including the Fulbright-Hays, the SSRC, and the ACLS, and has published various articles on late communism. Before coming to Vassar, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Emory University's Center for Humanistic Inquiry. She teaches in both the Department of History and in Women's Studies, offering a range of courses on Modern Europe and Eastern Europe.
